Reality Check – How are you Flipping?

One year ago I had the honor to interview Peter Hinssen on the Creativity World Forum. In this one-minute-interview he explains how we are only halfway through the digital revolution.

In his own words: “we are in the middle of the Flip”. Have look to see what he means with that.

Hinssen explains that extrapolating the past is a losing battle. If we want to be prepared for the future, we need to focus on the limits. His 2010 book The New Normal (Amazon affiliate link) describes a society without digital limits. The future we are heading for is a one where organizations are faced with employees and customers who no longer tolerate digital failure. Internet and connectivity will be just as ubiquitous as electricity.

This means IT departments too will have to adopt a new way of working. IT-departments were used to build big systems, now they will have to create small, flexible structures that can be adapted quickly. As Hinssen puts it: “They no longer have to build pyramids, they must put up tents instead.” Have a look at this second video to find out about his vision on the future of IT.

For sure, our colleagues of the IT department are now entering an era where their thinking will be challenged tremendously. But it doesn’t stop there. The Flip will also have an impact on the way we interact and collaborate. The cloud is only the beginning, just like the internet started the digital economy. Business as usual will be flipping as well.

Compared to last year, we can no longer deny to be in the middle of the digital revolution. The only question is: how will we navigate when our organizations are hit by the digital tsunami?

May the Flip be with you 🙂
